New Gas Boiler Costs, Benefits And Savings

According to the Energy Saving Trust there are great savings to be made on energy bills if you’re upgrading your old boiler for a new A-rated energy efficient condensing boiler – up to as much as £310 per annum in some cases !!

New Boiler Cost

While old boilers can achieve anywhere between 50-70% efficiency, A-rated boilers have to be at least 88% efficient to satisfy Building Regulations, and some models even manage to achieve over 90%. The more energy inefficient your existing boiler the greater the saving you’ll be able to achieve on your annual energy bills.

Whilst purchasing a new boiler is a big investment and potentially a rather expensive one, there is help available. For example there's the government ECO scheme and Green Deal Home Improvement Fund.

Getting Started

First check to see if you qualify for a free boiler grant. If you’re not eligible we would recommend you obtain a free boiler quotes from STL Heating. Sourcing a quote will help you to get the best possible price for a new gas boiler installation.

Advantages of installing a new gas boiler

  • Cheaper bills! Gas is an expensive fuel and prices continue to rise year in, year out. But if you have a new energy efficient boiler it will help to bring your bills down.
  • Make your home a nicer place to live. It will feel warmer and more comfortable.
  • Your home will be more energy efficient and more attractive to potential purchasers when you come to sell it.
  • A new A-rated boiler will help to bring down your household’s carbon dioxide emissions. Allowing you to do your bit for the environment!

How Much for a New Gas Boiler ?

Many people choose to replace old central heating boilers with a new boiler because modern boilers are smaller, quieter, more efficient leading to lower heating bills and lower environmental damage

New Boiler Cost

While the boiler itself is often the most expensive part of a new system, the total cost of a full install also includes pipes, overtime, valves, testing, power flushing and more - which all very important.

Boiler Costs

There are many different ways to pay for your new boiler, don't forget tha firms like STL Heating can offer low rates of boiler finance. Whilst many large firms offer one set price (although it is wise to check carefully everything this covers – sometimes unexpected fees can crop up that are not covered). This is often the most expensive option, with a lack of control give to the customer on the installation of the boiler system, but the piece of mind from a large company installing it with the promise of everything settled.

Costs Conclusion

The cost of a new boiler system will vary depending on the type of company you employ and type of boiler required – a large company will typically be more expensive but will not require as much effort on your part to get the work done, and independent companies or single person fitters do require some research and tracking down, but are often riskier as they often don't tend to provide support after the boiler has been fitted. In these cases it's best to get some competitive boiler quotes and go from there, alternatively try STL Heating as they are known to offer competitive quotes and what is more - they are in a position to match genuine quotes also.

Combi Boilers – Pros & Cons of Gas oilers

Combi boilers aka combination boilers, are very efficient condensing boilers that don't take up much room. They are now increasing popular due to their compact size and highly efficiency.

Combi Boiler

Combi boiler's are a unique kind of boiler because there's no need to store hot water - which means you don't need a hot water cylinder within an airing cupboard.

Why choose a combi boiler

They have in-built protection from rapid changes of water temperature while you are in the shower due to thermostat controls (most combi boilers have these controls and they often come as standard too).

If you don’t have much roof space for the installation of a different type of boiler, then a combi boiler is likely your best bet. Also, combi boilers are a very efficient boiler and they can heat water on demand.

Advantages of a combi boiler

The advantages of combi boilers are the monetary savings seen on the cost of hot water, plus the fact that you get water out of the taps or shower at the same pressure as if it was from the mains. Also because there are no tanks being placed in the roofing and so less pipe work to install. This results in a faster installation which can reducing initial costs as well. Also because combi's are so popular, boiler service costs should be relatively low whilst parts and boiler engineers really easy to find.

Gas Boiler Service – Gas Combi & Regular Boilers Boiler Servicing

It is cheaper to repair a boiler or get a new one ? Well with today's throw-away culture - some things are cheaper to replace than repair. However - it's cheaper to get your boiler repaired !

Boiler Service

As a gas boiler is often run every day in the home, and can wear faster than other appliances, but simple faults in a gas boiler are easy to fix! But what happens if faults are ignored and the problems increase ? It may result in replacing the whole gas boiler at a large expense, most importantly, an under-maintained gas boiler could prove dangerous to you and your family.

When do I service my boiler ?

Well, boiler use tends to increase after the summer when people turn on their gas boilers after months of inactivity. In these months, it is not uncommon for a gas boiler to develop issues with clogged or seized parts due to lack of use.
Due to this, it's recommended that you pen in a gas boiler service before the end of summer – as the months of February and October are the most quiet for boiler engineers. Not only are you more likely to get a better service and from an engineer at a time that suits you more this way, it is possible that you may also receive a discounted rate out of the peak months.

How much will it cost ?

A full service of your boiler can cost as much as £160 and will also vary depending on your location. Often Gas Safe Registered firms like STL Heating and Energy will offer competitive gas boiler quotes that are less than £160. Be sure to ring with the make and model of your boiler – as well as its age and location, to ensure you get the best deal possible.

New Gas Boiler

What new gas boiler do you need ? With so many different types, it's time to find out!

Boiler Quote

There are numerous types of gas boiler which can be installed in any home, catering for various user requirements and preferences. The only question is available space plus deciding if you want an immediate hot water supply.

Regular Boiler

A regular boiler is known as a conventional boiler - often this includes the presence of a boiler which is situated separately from the hot water cylinder which is fed from a cold water source.

Combi Boiler

The combi boiler, whose space-saving design makes it more ideal for homes that have very little loft-space or simply no need for instant hot water.

These boilers use a method that saves significantly on hot water costs as there is no constant hot water supply, but it provides hot water as if it were on demand.

System Boiler

The system boiler is largely rather similar to the regular boiler, however, it has incorporated some key changes which aid the efficiency of the installation process and allow the boiler to integrate more simply into a house where the previous boiler is being replaced.

Also like the combi boiler, the cold water supply is pumped straight into the boiler itself. This creates lower running costs, as the boiler itself provides hot water on demand, but without the need for a storage cylinder, as with the regular boiler.

Condensing Boilers

Two decades ago, condensing boilers suffered from being over-complicated, and not as reliable as other kinds of domestic boilers. Thankfully, things have really moved on and improved considerably.

Did you know that the simple major difference between a condensing boiler and a non-condensing boiler is the efficieniency of the heat exchanger. Also, that the water condenses inside the boiler, and so just needs to be drained away periodically. This is a very rapid and easy thing to do.

What are the advantages of a condensing boiler ?

When it comes to what is so good about condensing boilers, the array of benefits include:

Energy efficiency

Condensing boilers are simply more energy efficient than older boilers, carrying an A or B scale SEDBUK rating – the highest possible. With modern heating controls, a condensing boiler could help to save you upto £250 a year in your energy bills, while if you already have heating controls fitted in your home to a regular boiler, replacing this boiler with a condensing boiler could save you up to £130.

Lower Fuel Bills

As condensing boilers are so energy efficient, they burn a lot less fuel to to get the same energy to supply to your home. This all means lower fuel bills, which is a relief with gas  prices rising all the time! Although condensing boilers can be expensive to purchase and install, there various schemes to help with this like new boiler pay monthly plans.

New Boiler Installation

There are a range of central heating boilers of all shapes and sizes, from small and compact boilers that can fit in the space of a small kitchen cupboard to larger, high-output monoliths.

Installing a new boiler, is something a member of the public should do, but there are choices available when installing a new boiler - these can save you money, time and hassle.

Getting your boiler

It's easy to find a business that can supply and fit central heating boiler for your home. Not only this, but such firms can offer you help and advice on choosing the right boiler too. Best part of it is, they may be able to provide a free boiler quote for you - making your life easier!

 What about boiler servicing ?

Often boilers need to be serviced annually in order to keep them running properly - this applies to all domestic gas boilers. Also, if you have a new boiler installed then this will also need an annual service simply because this is part of the warranty.

So, don't miss out on getting your boiler serviced - because your warranty and heating depend on it.

What Kinds Of Central Heating Boilers Are There ?

There are a range of central heating boilers of all shapes and sizes, from small and compact boilers that can fit in the space of a small kitchen cupboard to larger, high-output monoliths.

Different types of central heating boilers available have their own benefits and drawbacks. Boilers can run on gas, oil and even electricity ? Plus they differ in size and output - so it can be hard to know what you need, and what you can really have!

What boiler do I need?

Depending on your property (inc. size and number of bedrooms), there are a range of types of central heating boilers to think about - which differ in size, cost and output too. Whatever your need it’s vital that you get good solid professional advice and boiler quotes before you proceed.

How about a Combination Boiler ?

The most popular boiler is the combination boiler (often referred to as a ‘combi’ boiler) and half of boilers sold within the UK are new combi boilers. This is mainly due to their  convenience, as most central heating systems use a copper cylinder to provide hot water, but a combination boiler will heat the water needed around the house within its unit. A combi system will not require a cold water tank or separate water cylinder to supply it, so that the costs of hot water will be a little lower than with a boiler that holds water in a cylinder.

What about a Wall Mounted Boiler ?

Most boilers are designed to be wall mounted, with more compact and lighter design. Wall mounted boilers come in many versions, such as with a Fanned Flue or Room Sealed. Lik most new boilers, the wall mounted type of boiler needs to have a “system by-pass” fitted, which is used to filter water throughout the boiler appliance to prevent problems later on like “kettling”.

Maybe a Condensing Boiler ?

This type of boiler has a “heat exchanger”, which allows heat to be re-circulated making it more energy efficient. One of the issues with condensing boilers is the pluming effect it creates from the flue terminal, which is often mistaken for steam. The pluming is not a danger, although is considered a nuisance and will occur for all the time that the boiler is running. Because of this, the placement of a condensing boiler can be more difficult.

Green Deal and Energy efficient boilers

The Government launched the Green Deal in October 2012 and even though it's been pulled last year, it's now back out again.

Energy Efficient Boiler
Energy Efficient Boiler

Gas fired condensing boilers will help in getting Britain’s old housing stock up to scratch. If you've got an old boiler then chances are it's using up more gas than it's meant to. Sure you'd love a new boiler, but you might think it's not affordable?

So what about Green Deal? It allows you to make their homes and businesses more energy efficient, i.e. heating and insulation measures to improve the way their properties are heated and insulated with no upfront cost

What’s the fuss about condensing boilers?

Your boiler can be generating at least 50% of your yearly energy bills. However, new condensing boilers are key to cutting your central heating bills. Sure if you’ve had your boiler for more than 15 years then it won't be all that efficient. By optimising your central heating system, replacing an old boiler with an A-rated condensing model you'll be able to reduce your annual heating bills!!

Can I really get a one of these new boilers with Green Deal?

Yes you can - you need the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund. How do I get started ? To get started with Green Deal, the first thing you need to do, is to get an assessment carried out. This is easy to arrange and is best booked-in early, as demand for Green Deal is big - so it's important not to miss out. Finding a Green Deal assessor / provider is a good idea, but speaking to proven reliable and trustworthy Green Deal specialists like STL Heating is highly recommended.

How will I pay for my new energy efficient boiler?

It's easy as there’s no upfront cost, money to pay for the work is taken from the Green Deal Finance Company, which is a private consortium set up to support the scheme. You pay off the loan through savings on your energy bills. The Green Deal is governed by the ‘Golden Rule ‘ which means any savings on your bills estimated to be achievable through recommended home improvements must be more or at the very least equal too than what it will cost you to have the work done.

Get cash back on a new boiler

From June 2014 you’ll be able to apply for cash back if you’re installing a new boiler under the Green Deal. The Government has set up the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund, with up to £1,600 cash back on offer, comprising of:
  • Up to £1,000 if you install a new gas condensing boiler, together with one additional home improvement measure, such as cavity wall insulation, replacement doors, floor insulation, double glazing or secondary double glazing.
  • Up to £500 if you carry out these home improvements within a year of moving into a new home.
  • Up to £100 towards the cost of the Green Deal assessment.
Whilst the Green Deal scheme had shut down earlier on last year after households grabbed all of the available £120m. Good news for home owners - the Green Deal is now back - though, for a limited time.

Find out more about the Green Deal by watching the video below.
